Why a blog on GD?

I thought of writing something on diet for Gestational Diabetes (GD) when my daughter-in-law had GD last year. Being a vegetarian, she had very little choice when it came to American hospital diet. She was admitted in the hospital on the 26th week of gestation with high GD and for about 3 weeks, I had to manage her diet with proper calculation of carbohydrate, protein and fibre. With proper guidance and wonderful cooperation from her dietitian, we could keep her glucose level under control. She delivered a girl baby on her 29th week, and both mother and daughter are doing great today.

Natural Cures

Natural Cures:
Given below are some of the natural remedies for Gestational Diabetes, more so for regular diabetes.

Onion

Onion is considered to lower the sugar level in the blood to a considerable extent. But cooking onion with fries and pakodas is not good as it will lead to high fat and cholesterol. Some of the recipes of onion include plain raitha, onion sambar, salads with raw minced onion and adding minced onion with many vegetable curries.

Bitter Gourd

The gourd-like fruit has a long history as a treatment for diabetes. Bitter melon improves the body's ability to use blood sugar and improves glucose tolerances. Also, at least one animal study noted that bitter melon fruit juice may cause a renewal and recovery of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.

Garlic

Garlic is another natural way to fight gestational diabetes. It can help regulate glucose levels in the body while also improving blood circulation. Fresh garlic cloves can be added to your normal cooking. You can reap the same benefits by taking a garlic capsule. Garlic capsules are available in most health food stores.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is yet another natural remedy for gestational diabetes. Cinnamon contains chemicals called polyphenols which may improve insulin function. One way to increase your intake of cinnamon is to add about three tablespoons of cinnamon to a liter of boiled water. Allow the cinnamon water to cool, then drink.

 Mango Leaves

A tea made from mango tree leaves is a natural way to keep gestational diabetes under control. To make the tea, steep three or four leaves from a mango tree in a cup of boiling water for five to ten minutes, then drink.

Bitter gourd – Onion sabji

Cook bitter gourd and toor dhal in the pressure cooker with turmeric powder.

Season mustard and urad dhal in a tsp of oil and sauté the onion in it. When the onion is transparent, add the bitter gourd, salt and toor dhal and allow it to boil in the tamarind solution. When the raw smell of the tamarind solution leaves, add the ground powder and allow it to boil for 2 minutes and keep. If the sabji is dilute, add one tsp of rice flour to it at the end. This is an ideal side dish for rice and chappathi.
